Melbourne

Melbourne is located in the south-east of Australia and is also the capital of Victoria. And it's a large port on the coast where many ships visit each day. The city has 3,345,000 inhabitants.

As to climate, in summer the average temperature is 21-35 degrees. In winter the minimum is 2-3 degrees. Snow is very uncommon but the weather is often very cold. The temperature changes quickly.

There is a large and wide river, called the Yarra River running through the city centre. Many cafes are alongside the Yarra River.

Melbourne is a multicultural city in which many Chinese, Vietnamese, Greeks and Italians live. The main language is English but in some suburbs Vietnamese or Chinese are the first language. English is the second for many residents.

Melbourne has a very large and new Crown Casino in the city centre. There are many art galleries and museums in the city. It's a music and arts centre of Australia. Most of Australia's famous animals and birds are in the zoo. On the beaches, there is very clean and the water maybe is cooler than Sydney. Also Melbourne Cricket Ground is very famous. There are many clubs and bars where they play live music. In the city, there're a lot of colourful cafe shops and different tasty food from around world.

It has a large public transport system including trains, buses and electric trams in the city centre. And the fees are so cheap.

Melbourne has different kinds of industry, such as car manufacture, clothing manufacture and so on. However, clothing manufacture is decreasing as imports from China are increasing.

Thanks for the information on Melbourne, Yvonne. I was lucky to go there on a couple of occassions and I love the place. It reminds me a lot of Europe, I think is the proportion of the buildings and the streets. We went to some very good restaurants, a concert, the Art Gallery and many suburbs, each with a distinct flavour. I want to go back soon!
